Charlottesville Virginia is a beautiful city rich in American History as well as outdoor activities and attractions. It is an ideal destination for anyone seeking both fun and relaxation.

Central Virginia has everything from hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains to floating down the James River. It has a number of wineries to visit as well as four historical presidential homesteads to see. There is so much to do in and around Charlottesville, everyone is bound to find something exciting.

Hiking:

Humpback Rocks: A very popular hike due to its proximity to the Blue Ridge Parkway and I-64 near Afton Mountain.

Crabtree Falls: Crabtree Falls features a series of five major cascades and a number of smaller ones, a great hike.

Ragged Mountain Natural Area: A beautiful 980-acre forest of mature oak, hickory, poplar, pine, and maple trees.

Old Rag Mountain: One of the most popular hikes in the mid-Atlantic region.

 

James River Rafting and Floating:

Historical Sites:

Monticello: The home of President Thomas Jefferson. A must see attraction.

Ash Lawn Highland: Home of President James Monroe, the fifth President of the United States.

Montpelier: Home of President James Madison, the fourth President of the United States.

Michie Tavern: This tavern provides a great dinning experience with food from yesteryear. Just a half mile from Monticello.

 

Local Wineries and Wine Tours:

Arcady Vineyard: Provides wonderful wine tasting tours to small groups ranging from 2 to 10 people.

Monticello Wine Trail: Very nice site listing and linking the local wineries around Central Virginia.

Blue Mountain Brewery: Great brewery and brew pub. Fantastic food and beautiful views.

Star Hill Brewery: Another local micro brewery situated at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Worth the visit.

Devil's Backbone Brewery: Located near Wintergreen Resort. A great brew pub with great food, beer and mountain scenery.
